Teak is a tropical hardwood tree of species Tectona grandis and native to South and Southeast Asia, mainly India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Burma, but is naturalized and cultivated in many countries such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and etc. When teak newly comes in Vietnam, it is called by French name “teck” and then gradually named “Gia ty” or “Butt” (because teak is used for making the butt). Nowadays, teak has been planted in different provinces in Vietnam.

Teak timber is a yellowish brown timber with good grain and texture. Its wood has a leather-like smell when it is freshly milled.  The annual ring is easily recognized, the latewood has smaller and sparser xylems than the earlywood.  It has average weight with 0.7 density, 32 kg / cm² tensile force across the grain and 471 kg / cm² compression along the grain and 1,253 kg / cm  buckling.

Teak is precious wood and has more characteristic than other timbers used widely in the furniture field. Teak timber is particularly valued for its durability and water resistance, and is used for boat building, exterior construction, veneer, furniture, carving, turnings, and other small wood projects. In addition, the Teak wood is flexible, easy to bend, high tensile strength often used to produce tables, chairs and cabinets. 

Moreover, Teak is likely to meet the changes in weather and the harshest environments which any kind of wood cannot be compared. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for high-value products such as butt, yacht and sleeper for railway. In India, Teak is used extensively to make doors and window frames, furniture, and columns and beams in old type houses.
